Designing for Dollars.

Somewhere…CoCo Chanel is turning in her grave.

The Limited Edition Diet Coke bottles designed by Karl Lagerfeld

When our darling Coco was alive and designing her signature pieces (Think: Chanel suits, Chanel handbags, Chanel #5, Chanel’s interlocking C’s-trademark) – I don’t think she ever considered designing a bottle for a popular soda company. The woman was a true innovator of her time but she was obsessed with style and sophistication NOT soda.

Fast forward to 2011 and Karl Lagerfeld -THE Karl Lagerfeld who now runs the House of Chanel, has partnered with Diet Coke to design 3 limited edition containers to hold (what else) Diet Coke. The designer bottles will be on shelves in select stores in early June and will only be around for a limited run. Each and every bottle has a silhouette of Uncle Karl on the front and is adorned with either pink and white swirls or an assortment of spots and dots.

One can only wonder why Karl Lagerfeld decided to expand his Couture label to include Diet Coke. The only conclusion that I can possibly ponder is perhaps Uncle Karl has been hit hard  by the recession and finds himself “designing for dollars. “

Mr. Karl Lagerfeld (Uncle Karl) and his latest designs.
