Cute Kimonos

The weather is finally getting warmer and it’s time to put away those heavy jackets and opt out for some lighter fare.

The perfect topper for just about any outfit this Summer is the Kimono. The kimono made a major comeback last Summer and this season it’s even more versatile.

Pair your pretty kimono with your favorite jeans and cami, or opt out and layer over shorts with a tank, use as a swimsuit cover up or even layer over your favorite body hugging summer dress for interest. No matter how you decide to wear your kimono- it can be comfortable and stylish. (your basic fashion win-win)! It’s no wonder that the kimono has made a comeback!

Kimono Craving(s)

Lately I seem to be OBSESSED with the kimono.  To be clear this current craving does not harken for the kimono of yesterday (which was characteristically made of a very heavy and ornate satin fabric and tied with an Obie belt) but instead today’s version is constructed from  fabrications that flow and can be found in  a bevy of pretty prints and solids. The updated kimono is often paired with jeans and/or a cropped pant but looks equally “chic’ over a summer dress or short combo.

There are a few rules of the road to make today’s kimono glamour worthy and of course to aid in achieving a look that gives you the slimmest silhouette…(which truth be told is probably the main goal with every outfit).

When selecting the perfect kimono for your body type keep in mind the following style guidelines:

1. FABRICATION  Opt for fabrics with a beautiful drape aka one that flowwwws.  It makes the whole look more fluid and relaxed yet polished.

2 .VOLUME   Keep the volume of a kimono in check. Translation: this is an unconstructed look that is not meant to be tailored BUT  that doesn’t mean you want to wear a kimono so voluminous that it hides YOU! One size fits ALL is a fashion myth.

3. LENGTH   Think proportion when it comes to length. A long(ish) flowing kimono is elongating to your silhouette however keep in mind if you are shorter or heavier choose a style that hits above the ankle and go for a smaller print or darker solids.

4. PRINTS VS SOLIDS   Rule of thumb: Smaller prints and darker colors are always more slimming but if you prefer brighter colors for Summer look for a kimono with side panels insets. (Additional style note: Monochromatic dressing aids greatly in making you look your most svelte). In the end the best way to make a kimono uber flattering is add a heel. Heels always raise the style quotient not to mention the additional height gives you a long lean look.
