Closet Organization 101…Let’s get started

Category: Closet Organization

As the New Year begins, many of us will experience a sudden urge to clean out clutter. (Sound familiar?) Many of us adopt a mindset of “out with the old and in with the new” and we’re all ready for a fresh start!  It’s time to dig deep into your closet and starting the process of  (dah dah dah)DECLUTTERING. I know that doesn’t sound like FUN, but it can be if you keep your eye on the prize on how happy you will be with a well organized space.

To help you get started, I am reposting an article I authored a few months ago to help motivate you and guide you along in the process. In addition I’ve posted my THREE  favorite  items to help you get your closet get in tip top shape.

A well organized closet not only brings you calm and clarity, but quite frankly  YOUR CLOSET  should be  a respite where you can stand back and delight in all the items that make you feel good about yourself. If your closet doesn’t do all these things then… ..perhaps we need a mini redo to get you to feel better about your closet space.  Here are a few of my top 5 tips to get you started…

First and foremost only keep items in your closet that make you feel FABULOUS. Anything that doesn’t fit, is ripped, torn or stained has got to go in addition to any items that you just don’t wear. You’ll thank me when you discard these items and make room for new items that add a dose of happy to your wardrobe.

Every closet is easier to navigate when items are hung light to dark within each category. Nuff said.

Divide and Conquer Closet drawers become a mecca of calm when your items are folded neatly and have dividers or separate compartments.

Short on space -Roll your items for additional  storage.

Shoe LOVE-Shoes are easy to navigate by style and heel height when positioned front to back next to each other.

Sweater Storage: It’s always better to fold a sweater BUT if you just don’t have the closet space they can be folded OVER a felt covered hanger so they don’t stretch out. (see below)

My top three essentials to keep your closet organized:

# 1

Velvet covered hangers are  the KEY to happiness. I highly recommend using all one type of hanger for closet solidarity. My number one  preference for a neat and tidy closet -would be velvet covered hangers. You can also use wood or plastic but to insure that items don’t stretch velvet covered is best.

Acrylic  Shelf Dividers are a huge help in keeping purses, sweaters and jeans in order.

*I’ve attached a link to the image below -Amazon has a wide selection at various price points to choose from.

If you’re short on space for shoe storage might I HIGHLY suggest taking a photo of each pair of shoes and posting them on the front of your shoe box or step up your storage game and put your pumps into clear shoe boxes. You’ll thank me in the morning when you’re looking for that perfect pair and don’t have to open numerous boxes to find what you’re looking for….

Jewelry Organization Tips and Tricks

Posted By: Terri
Category: Fashion tips

When one of your dearest friends on the planet tells you she has just dropped the contents of her jewelry box on the floor and is in need of some jewelry organization tips, one does not hesitate for even a nano second to oblige.

My friend Mary, is a major and I do mean MAJOR… Glamour Girl. She is a  classic beauty and surrounds herself with the most gorgeous pieces. (Read into that ….Mary has a very elevated taste level aka great taste)! When she mentioned that the jewelry box  had fallen on the floor I wanted to fly right out and bend down and pick up every bit of bling because when it comes to Mary, you just know every piece is Estate worthy and who doesn’t love an afternoon admiring some pretty substantial sparkly!

As time was of the essence, I wanted to respond and give Mary some easy  organizing tips that require a few simple steps:

There are basically two basic components of jewelry organization:

  1. Group like items together
  2. Make sure you can see EVERYTHING. (If you don’t see it you won’t use it or…. even remember you have it). i.e. Don’t even think of throwing everything in a drawer without any dividers because when it comes to jewelry we are talking major tangling and possibly damaging your beautiful bling (and that is so NOT happening on my watch).

If you have the drawer space I suggest:

A. Drawer organizers (available at The Container Store and Michael’s)

B. If you lack drawer space opt for displaying your items in pretty trays and decorative  items on  top of your dresser. (see above photo)

C. If you have oodles of wall space, might I suggest a decorative hanging of your most beautiful items for easy access and major display options.

P.S. Miss you Mary-Wish I was there to help organize your fabulous jewelry drawers.

Drawer Detail….

Posted By: Terri
Category: Fashion tips

I was helping a friend organize her wardrobe today and after we finished the closet portion of the style reboot we went into the “dreaded drawers.” She alerted me ahead of time that they were an absolute disaster-translation “a mess” BUT that has never stopped me from going in and getting things in proper order. I love a challenge and in most cases all you need do is follow a few simple steps and your drawers can be delightfully organized and detailed in no time.

Here are a few quick tips to getting your drawer detail done pronto:

  1. Start by taking EVERYTHING out of your drawers-yes..I do mean everything.
  2. Once everything is out of the drawers- start sorting what you do and  don’t wear. *Rule of thumb- if the item doesn’t look good, doesn’t fit, is damaged or you’ve never worn it( tell tale tags still hanging) -it’s time to discard, donate or give to someone that you know might use it.
  3. Next -fold items neatly into categories: Jeans, Shorts, workout wear, tee shirts, sweaters ,scarves-(I think you get the picture) etc.
  4. Now that all items are folded and into categories, place back into your  drawers with items you use most toward the top of your dresser.

Dreamy Drawers

Category: Closet Organization

If you’ re looking for a way to start your day with a little less stress how about…organizing your drawers. You know the drawers filled with your bras, panties, socks, and such. It’s an amazing and easy turn of events to have everything organized and in clear view so you can just pick and choose with the greatest of ease. Not only does this give your mind some much needed morning clarity but it will aid in getting  you ready and out the door in no time flat. Now I know there are some of you that say: ” BUT it’s so much easier just throwing it all in the same drawer and sorting through it everyday to eventually FIND what I’m looking for.” Right. Which bears asking the question: CAN you actually find ANYTHING? This whole organizing of the drawers by category doesn’t take oodles of your time to do in fact it will be time well spent and save you time in the long run. So here’s a few easy suggestions to get you going toward organizing the drawers of your dreams.

1. Organize by category

2. Within each category organize light to dark. O.K. I know this sounds like I’ve gone all ADD on you but trust me not only is it a time saver BUT it looks pretty.

3.To fold or not to fold THAT is the question: Fold panties. Bras lay flat and fold under straps. Socks-roll up. And…if you have any fold slips. 4. To step up your drawer style why not line them with contact paper, tissue paper., fabric or wallpaper remnants.

Line um UP!

Nothing but nothing makes getting dressed easier than lining up your shoes in a pretty row and seeing first hand all you have to choose from. If you lack storage options and don’t have an ample closet to display your pretty pairs properly then might I suggest organizing your shoes in clear boxes and posting a photo in the front for full view.

Clothes Pin-Update!

Posted By: Terri
Category: Closet Organization

What ever  happened to the good old clothes pin? I remember as a young girl the smell of clothes hanging outdoors in the Summer air being held onto the clothes line by clothes pins. I KNOW this makes me sound like I’m a 100- but stay with me for a moment to think about air drying your garments  outdoors (which P.S. in the day was not only environmentally savvy but when you brought your clothes indoors they had the most lovely scent of summer-a wisp of floral and fresh air-it was heavenly). When I came across this perfect way to display your scarves I went nostalgic for a simpler time when clothes pins were a laundry room staple and life was a tad simpler.  Maybe it’s time to bring back the clothes pin and hanging our garments out to dry when the weather gets warm.  Just a thought-but a nice one at that.

For an Instant Update-here are a few ways to insert the clothes pins of yesterday for multiple uses TODAY!

Closet Envy…

Posted By: Terri
Category: Closet Organization

The start of every New Year brings about the need to cleanse. Not only do we want to clean up our diet from all the oodles of sweets and treats we devoured during the holidays but our closets could do well by a bit of cleansing as well. I mean do we really NEED that skirt we bought on sale from 5 years ago that still has the tags on it? Maybe you will wear it SOMEDAY.  I want you to just give some thought to all the pieces hanging around  your closet that you haven’t worn in eons. It’s just a thought. We won’t do anything right now. Promise. Just give yourself sometime (say a day or two ) and see if you could “embrace” the idea of donating some items to a worthy cause or even selling it on eBay or Thread flip. In the meantime… here are some closets to inspire you and get you in the mood to upgrade. It’s a New Year ..How does the saying go: “Out with the old in with the new!”
