A Need to Read….2 Stylish Stories

Posted By: Terri
Category: Tuesday's Tip

Tuesday’s Tip…If you’re in the mood to read a book that takes you away from the daily grind, I have two books that have been in my  reading rotation for years. Truth be told-I have read and re-read each book more than a few times and find that they still deliver. Both books are not exactly  “hot of the press” recommendations but rather two books that stand the test of time. If you’re looking to cuddle up and lose yourself in a good stylish read here are two of my absolute favorites.

“If Wintour is the Pope . . . Coddington is Michelangelo, trying to paint a fresh version of the Sistine Chapel twelve times a year.–Time”

I personally think Grace Coddington is a styling genius and I do not use those words lightly. If you were an avid reader of Vogue and relished the beautiful photospreads within it’s contents , I’m here to inform you that more times than not they were styled by the artistic and visionary Grace Coddington. This is one interesting and luminating read about all things fashion and style.

A brief bio:

Grace Coddington’s extraordinary talent and fierce dedication to her work as creative director of Vogue have made her an international icon. Known through much of her career only to those behind the scenes, she might have remained fashion’s best-kept secret were it not for The September Issue, the acclaimed 2009 documentary that turned publicity-averse Grace into a sudden, reluctant celebrity. Grace’s palpable engagement with her work brought a rare insight into the passion that produces many of the magazine’s most memorable shoots.
With the witty, forthright voice that has endeared her to her colleagues and peers for more than forty years, Grace now creatively directs the reader through the storied narrative of her life so far. Evoking the time when models had to tote their own bags and props to shoots, Grace describes her early career as a model, working with such world-class photographers as David Bailey and Norman Parkinson, before she stepped behind the camera to become a fashion editor at British Vogue in the late 1960s. Here she began creating the fantasy travelogues that would become her trademark. In 1988 she joined American Vogue, where her breathtakingly romantic and imaginative fashion features, a sampling of which appear in this book, have become instant classics.
Delightfully underscored by Grace’s pen-and-ink illustrations, Grace will introduce readers to the colorful designers, hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, models, and celebrities with whom Grace has created her signature images. Grace reveals her private world with equal candor–the car accident that almost derailed her modeling career, her two marriages, the untimely death of her sister, Rosemary, her friendship with Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Liz Tilberis, and her thirty-year romance with Didier Malige. Finally, Grace describes her abiding relationship with Anna Wintour, and the evolving mastery by which she has come to define the height of fashion.

The wonderful Betty Halbreich has stories to tell and they are fascinating. If you love fashion and a great back story about all that goes on behind of scenes in dressing some of the most fashionable women on the planet …Pick up this book ASAP.

A brief bio…

Betty Halbreich is a true original. Now in her eighties, she has spent nearly forty years at the luxury store Bergdorf Goodman, working with socialites, stars and ordinary women. She has led many to appreciate their real selves through clothes, frank advice and her unique brand of wisdom; she is trusted by the most discriminating persons – including Hollywood’s top stylists – to tell them what looks best. But her own transformation from cosseted girl to fearless truth-teller is the greatest makeover of all.

Born into a successful Chicago family, aged twenty Betty married dashing Sonny Halbreich and came to Manhattan, where the couple threw themselves into a whirlwind of long hours, cocktails and Park Avenue parties, living the high life in 1950s New York. However, the marriage began to fray and after two decades came undone completely. Bereft, Betty attempted suicide. As she embarked on the frightening process of reclaiming herself, she was offered a lifeline: a job at Bergdorf Goodman. For Betty, with her innate sense of style and craftsmanship, it was a perfect fit.

Hardworking, elegant, and gifted with sparkling wit and razor-sharp powers of observation, in her amazing life story as in her style guidance Betty Halbreich is never afraid to tell it straight.

The September Issue is THE issue in fashion every year. Being chosen  to grace the cover of any September issue is major but THE VOGUE COVER is the absolute pinnacle. Now you may be wondering why do we even care? REALLLLLY? Of course we care because  quite frankly September is the month that ushers us into the most fashionable time of the year. September brings Fashion Week for starters followed by  the cooler temps of Autumn which then translates into layering and lots of clothing options and finally (tah dah dah dah) the holidays are upon us which brings out oodles of sparkle and glitter and gorgeous party attire….and just between us isn’t it alllll about the sparkle?!

So after my little fashion rant you probably want to just get to it and find out who is on THE SEPTEMBER COVER? Here she is “it girl” of the moment- Kendall Jenner. Flawless and picture perfect.  Congrats Kendall -you have entered the Fashion Hall of Fame.

You know it’s nearing the end of summer and time to start thinking Fall Fashion when upcoming September issue images  start pouring out on the web. The grand poo- bah for cover girl status in September is Vogue and I couldn’t be more thrilled by their choice. The fabulous Jennifer Lawrence. I positively adore this girl She’s not partying at night in Hollywood, no alcohol or drug abuse  problems, no bad behavior, no trailers about her on TMZ.  The girl has major talent and carries herself with class. In a word a  genuine certifiable STAR!

So Vogue…So Beautiful

Nobody does a photo spread like Vogue. NOBODY! As I was flipping through my recent issue of US Vogue I was amazed by the breathtaking  photos featuring the recent nuptials of  Mary Chateris.(I hadn’t a clue who she was but if she’s in Vogue and a wedding pictorial to boot- I’m guessing  she’s either a supermodel, a celebrity that I hadn’t heard of yet or someone marrying a celebrity). It really didn’t matter-what mattered were the photographs.  In my head I could  hear the voice of Candice Bergen’s character saying to  to SJP (playing Carrie Bradshaw in SATS1)..”Carrie think of it:  Vogue photographers, Vogue airbrush, Vogue make- up, Vogue styling..nothing could be better.” I know the words were in the movie but they certainly ring true in real life.. I give you Exhibit A!

Leave it to J. Lo, to give us all a little “push” in our push up routine. La Lopez looks drop dead gorgeous in all the swimwear she’s sporting in her latest Vogue shoot.  (Photographed by uber fabu photographer Mario Testino). So.o.o.o if you’re in need of a little work out motivation (just in time for the impending swimsuit season-which by my calculations start in exactly 4 days)  keep the latest issue of Vogue near by. Chances are it will inspire you to do “one more” set….

Remember it’s called work-out for a reason.

The September Covers.

Category: Fashion

My birthday is just a few days away and it coincides with the arrival of my much anticipated GINORMOUS September Vogue. Year after year, Anna Wintour-editor and chief of Vogue, prints the cover headline to read “The Biggest Fashion Issue Ever.” (Translation: they have sold more fashion ADVERTISEMENTS and this baby is jam packed… I say, “Who cares if it’s ads or editorials as long as it’s fashion”-you can count me in!)I have always considered this to be one of the best birthday presents and thank my mother profusely for birthing me in mid-August. When my September Issue(s) do arrive I have been known to go into complete lock down-(usually sitting by some very quiet pool for hours on end). No phones, no music, no food, just a tall glass of  ice water by my side because I want to FOCUS. To say that I am in deep concentration would be an understatement. There is allot and I do mean allot to absorb….

So in the next few days, if you can’t reach me-jut assume I am “catching up” on my reading….As Tim Gunn would say: “Carry On.” I’ll be right back  after I finish turning the pages of my September issues.

SJP and Vogue!

Posted By: Terri
Category: Fashion

Vogue’s May Cover features Sarah Jessica Parker with a noteworthy article on her inside the hallowed pages. SJP, as Wonder Woman, Style Star and Modern Mom. Now I am not one to disagree when it comes to the accolades of Mrs. Parker. Love her in SATC. Adore that she is always gracious and professional in every single interview…and then there is the fashion-thank you Patricia Field (costume designer for SATC) who single handedly made SJP the Style Icon that she is today.  However, I am starting to wonder about one thing…. I can’t recall in all the years I have been reading my beloved Vogue, that Anna Wintour has ever featured anyone more than once. I think this is Sarah’s third or fourth layout for Vogue. Could it be that SJP and Anna Wintour are BFF’s??? Just wondering!
